Biography

Safiyah Zaidi is a Eugene McDermott Scholar at The University of Texas at Dallas majoring in biology with a minor in political science. On campus, she served as vice president of Model United Nations, where she developed her interest in global affairs, especially as it relates to public health. Passionate about healthcare, she worked as a provider on UT Dallas' University Emergency Medical Response team and volunteered at UT Southwestern Medical Center. She has a strong interest in health policy and served as a project lead for the Roosevelt Policy Institute to improve access to healthcare for marginalized groups. She has tried to gain a more holistic sense of medicine by interning with the International Rescue Committee and conducting research on a National Science Foundation funded study analyzing migration patterns. Zaidi hopes to unite her interests by understanding health care's unique role as an agent of global justice and international development. She plans to attend medical school after graduation and continue exploring the intersection of healthcare and human rights.
