Dylan McCarthy, a 2022 Distinguished College Scholar, is a junior at The University of Texas at Austin pursuing a dual degree in government and political communication with a minor in business and public policy. McCarthy worked for State Senator Sarah Eckhardt (TX-14) as an intern during the 87th Legislative Session and most recently as a policy associate. He assisted constituents and worked closely with senior policy staff on issues including criminal justice, housing, and public education. In 2021, McCarthy published independent research on the misdemeanor bail system and pretrial detention practices in Texas. On campus, he was an academic advisor for the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and served on the philanthropy committee for the Phi Delta Phi pre-law honor society. He is passionate about mental health advocacy and strives to facilitate positive change. After graduation, McCarthy plans to attend law school and pursue a career in public service.
