Josefina Ghio credits her passion for international engagement to her family’s genealogy. Her mother’s family came to the United States as Mexican immigrants; her father’s family originated in Italy, and her parents put down their roots in Texas. As a result, she understood from a young age that she was both part and product of a global community. In 2016, Ghio began her studies at The University of Texas at Arlington, where she has pursued a double major in English and Spanish. Her passion for civic engagement has been central to her studies. 2019 marks her ninth year serving on executive boards for non-profit organizations. Through these organizations, Ghio has had the opportunity to serve immigrant and refugee community members and has seen first-hand the challenges that come with adjusting to life in a new country. Ultimately, Ghio plans to continue advocating for displaced families after undergraduate studies through the Foreign Service or within immigration/refugee relief programs.
