Biography

Anat Fuksman is a junior at The University of Texas at Dallas majoring in biochemistry with minors in neuroscience and psychology. Hailing from Israel from a family of Soviet Jews, she was forced to reckon with and witness conflict and inequality taking place from a young age. As such, she aspires to live a life and career dedicated to giving back and promoting equality and understanding—this informs her outlook on medicine and healthcare policy. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Fuksman began working on campus with Comets HELP and the Brain Exercise Initiative to help elderly people who were suffering from isolation. She also served as the Jewish Holiday Chair for Hillel. Off campus, Fuksman has volunteered as a crisis counselor at Crisis Text Line, where she helped individuals going through mental health crises and connected them to resources. Through her work as a scribe at an emergency room, she noticed many of the downfalls of the healthcare system and became interested in healthcare policy. After graduation, Fuksman plans to attend medical school and use her experiences to help make the healthcare system more efficient, accessible, and equitable to better serve the people.
